What does the "Database mode" in Workstation mean?

StruxureWare Building Operation version 1.2
Cause
When "Database mode" is set reading and writing of values will only be from and to the database, no values from the devices will be read or written.
But when setting up a subscription in for example a graphic or the watch window it is always online values not database values.
